Ministry of Health Promotion releases Healthy Community Strategy

In April 2009, the MHP released details on funding stream for healthy communities for 2009-10. The Ministry outlined a one-window approach to funding provincial and community organizations to plan and delivery integrated programs that improve the health and wellness of Ontarians.

The new “Healthy Communities Fund” will widen the scope of MHP funding so that MHP can create opportunities for more partnerships among eligible local organizations, in order to provide more integrated programs.

Funding will be available for local initiatives that address at least two of the following: physical activity, healthy eating, injury prevention, substance abuse/misuse, smoking prevention and cessation and mental health.

The new fund will focus on the health of the following populations: children and youth, Aboriginal people, low-income families, ethnic populations and people with disabilities. The need for improvements in health amongst these communities has been clearly identified and the MHP is trying to address these groups.
