Rouge Marshes Trail
This is not a difficult trail, but it can be wet and somewhat overgrown, so sturdy footwear and long-sleeved shirts and long pants are recommended. Exploring the bottom lands and marshes of the lower Rouge, this route has quite a different feel to it than does the walk described for the Rouge tablelands.
Down here, vine-draped trees, dense thickets and abundant ostrich-fern groves create almost a feeling of being somewhere in the Deep South. Of course, upper slopes studded with sugar maple, red oak, red maple and white pine help to remind walkers that they are still somewhere north of Lake Ontario.
Directions: by transit, take the Rouge Hill 13 bus from the Rouge Hill GO station. Get off at the corner of Rouge Hills Drive and Island Road. By car, take Highway 401 to Port Union Road and Port Union Road south to Island Road. There is no parking on Island Road, so you will have to leave your car on Rouge Hills Drive and walk down Island Road to the starting point.
