Bowmanville and Soper Valley Trails

The Bowmanville Valley Trail travels along the west side of the Village of Bowmanville; the soper Trail follows Soper Creek. The trails were constructed in partnership between Valleys 2000 and the Municipality of Clarington.

Stephen’s Gulch Conservation Area consists of 130 hectares (320 acres) of forest just north of Bowmanville. The area was closed to the public in the 90’s due to funding cutbacks, but has been reopened with a 3 kilometre looped trail over a variety of terrain to allow passive recreational opportunities such as hiking, mountain biking and advanced cross-country skiing.

“The trail has been designed to protect the natural features of the area while providing a great outdoor nature experience for people in our communities,” says Perry Sisson of Central Lake Ontario Conservation. “This property offers a unique variety of settings from wet hemlock forest and groundwater springs to dry sandy ridges with butternut trees, all within a short walk.”

Protecting a large area of deciduous forest and coniferous forest/swamp along the Soper Creek valley system, Stephen’s Gulch Conservation Area also includes a portion of the provincially significant Soper Valley. Stephen’s Gulch Conservation Area is a five minute drive north of the Town of Bowmanville. To get to the conservation area, take Bethesda Road south of Taunton Road, and turn east on Stephen’s Mill Road.
