Winter camping is available at the Nipigon Marina from March 11th-13th. We are able to provide two winter camping tents that are large enough for four people in each. They are pretty basic and need something on the ground, as well as a heater of some sort if that’s something you want. They can be booked on a first come first serve basis and are $15/tent/night. We are going to take care of clearing the area for sites and setting up the 2 tents on Friday at the Marina. Have your own tent and just looking for a site? Reserve a spot for $5/night and we will clear a space for you at the Marina. Send us a message now to reserve a tent or camping site at the Marina for Ice Fest!
Guided Snowshoe Trek
Not a climber? Coming to the ice fest with the whole family? Why not take a guided snowshoe trek up the Mazukama Falls Trail through a beautiful cedar forest and enjoy the spectacular views from the summit!
Meeting place is at the Legion Hall (102 5th St, Nipigon) on Saturday March 12th at 9:00 a.m. The trek is approximately a 15 minute drive from Nipigon and is near some of the ice climbing venues. People should be prepared take their own vehicles or arrange their own rides/carpooling. Registration is $10/person and includes a free pair of snowshoes to use if you don’t have your own!
#1 Kama Bay Hike with possible Ice Climbing if conditions are safe. This will be a 4-5 hour trip. You’ll need snowshoes, ice climbing gear, waterproof top layer and boots, and a change of under layers. Bring a water bottle and Bag lunch. We will meet at 9am at the Legion and car pool to Kama Bay.
#2 Snowshoe Nipigon. A 1-2 hour trip to overlook the township of Nipigon. We will hike through the town, up the steep hillside behind, and gain a fantastic view of the Nipigon River and Township before hiking back to the Legion. A good choice for those who want to get outside but not take a rugged trip. You’ll need snowshoes, a water resistant top layer, and a medium warmth base layer. Bring a water bottle and snack. We will meet at 9am at the Legion.
#3 Nipigon River Trail Hike. A 3-4 hour trip. This hike will take us along the rugged shores of Lake Superior and the Nipigon River. There are many scenic overlooks (aka uphill/downhill trail), a great choice for photographers or those looking for a longer day outside. You’ll need snowshoes, a water resistant top layer, and medium warmth base layer. Bring a water bottle and bag lunch. We will meet at 9am at the Legion and car pool to Red Rocks and will drive drivers back to their cars in Red Rocks at the end of the trip.
