THE ONTARIO TRAILS COUNCIL HONOURED WITH ONTARIO TRILLIUM FOUNDATION 25th ANNIVERSARY GREAT GRANTS AWARD

Kingston, November 2, 2007 – The Ontario Trails Council was honoured for the impact it has made in communities across the province at the Ontario Trillium Foundation's (OTF) 25th Anniversary Great Grants Awards on November 1, 2007. Held at the MaRS Centre in Toronto, the evening highlighted the achievements of 25 not-for-profit organizations from the more than ten thousand groups that received OTF funding over the past 25 years. These 25 organizations have exemplified excellence, innovation and leadership in their community and volunteer work.

“2007 marks the 25th anniversary of grant making for OTF and we are thrilled to honour Ontario Trails Council in recognition of the difference it has made in the lives of Ontarians,” said Helen Burstyn, Chair, OTF Board of Directors.

Ontarians love their outdoor trails, perhaps no group more so than the Ontario Trails Council. Established in 1988 as a coalition of hikers, cyclists, snowmobilers and horseback riders, the Ontario Trails Council is now an umbrella group of 100 trail user and land management organizations. In 2004 with a four year $355,000 OTF grant, the council continues to expand its work.

The Trillium Trail Network will be a lasting legacy of this grant. Thanks to OTF and the council, there are happy trails for all.

“Good things in Ontario are made possible through strong partnerships and we are grateful for the support of OTF,” said Patrick Connor, Executive Director, Ontario Trails Council. “Together we are helping to make Ontario great by building communities across the province. We are deeply honoured to be recognized as one of the best non-profits of the last 25 years, on the Foundation’s 25th anniversary.”

Over 25 years, there are few not-for-profit organizations in the province that OTF has not touched and few communities where its support has not made a difference. "That's true for the Ontairo Trails Council," adds Connor, "we achieved this honour due to timely support from the Ontario Government, our strategic alliances with Ontario Trail Federations, most notably Trans Canada Trail Ontario.

The Government of Ontario had the vision to create OTF 25 years ago; to support the Foundation’s growth over time; and to recognize its importance recently with an additional $20 million in annual funding that will enable the Foundation to do even more when it comes to building healthy and vibrant communities.
